For the August meeting of the Redlands Area Democratic Club, our speaker was Dr. Dorene Isenberg, past chair of the Economics Department of the University of Redlands. Her topic was

“Our Walk on the Wild Side: Neo-liberalism Unleashed”

Our current economic woes are not simply the result of recent economic policies “gone bad”. Where we are and why we’re here result from a change in ideology and global economic position and thinking that occurred close to 40 years ago. Dr. Isenberg addressed some of the crucial changes that signaled how we were altering our path and explained why and how these changes have been instrumental in producing the Great Recession and our non-existent recovery.

For the July meeting of the Redlands Area Democratic Club, we will be having a presentation on health care for all by Dr. Bill Honigman. His topic will be "Progress in Healthcare Reform: Update on the Crisis and the Political Solution"

Dr Bill Honigman, is a full-time practicing “ER doc” from Orange County, CA for over 25 years, husband and father of two grown sons, a twice elected former President of the South Orange County Democratic Club, a long-standing elected and re-elected member and former officer of the Orange County Democratic Central Committee, former elected delegate and appointed Rules Committee member of the Democratic National Convention, and now the Orange County Chapter Leader and California State Coordinator of the national grassroots organization Progressive Democrats of America (PDA).

June Primary Elections are Coming

There are important elections for representatives of the area for U.S. Congress, California Assembly and California Senate, as well as the San Bernardino County Supervisor.

Our Democratic candidates are

Important dates for the June primary election:
May 7: Sample ballots and vote-by-mail ballots for Permanent vote-by-mail voters mailed; registered voters may request vote-by-mail ballots to be sent
May 21: Last day to register to vote in the June primary
May 29: Last day to request vote-by-mail ballot from the registrar
June 5: Polls open 7am to 8pm for in-person voting or drop off of vote-by-mail ballots

It is extremely important to vote in the June primary for our Democratic candidates for office.

Additionally, members of the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee are being chosen in this election. Among the candidates for our Assembly District (40) there are several candidates from our Redlands Democratic club. They are noted with * in column 1.

Our speaker for this month will be Francine Busby, Executive Director of Run Women Run in San Diego County. We are very fortunate to be able to hear Francine, who is an accomplished speaker and also a past Democratic congressional candidate in San Diego.

Ms. Busby will speak on "The Rising Tide of Women". She will present astonishing statistics on the rising tide of women in leadership. The race is on to increase the number of women from board rooms to parliaments, Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Congress. Why? Because the most effective way to increase profits, prosperity, peace, equality and justice is to increase the number of women in policy making positions. So why does the United States rank at about the 90th place in the number of women in elected office? And why do young women think that Lady Gaga is more powerful than Nancy Pelosi? Ms. Busby will address these issues and more, and will engage in a question and answer period following her formal presentation.

A graduate of UC Irvine, Ms. Busby worked as a travel manager and marketer for the Walt Disney Travel company before becoming involved in politics. She ran two successful school bond campaigns in 1998 and 2000, became president of the Cardiff Education Foundation in 2000, was appointed to fill a vacancy to the Cardiff School Board, and in 2002, was elected for a full school board term. She has served as an adjunct professor of Women's Studies at California State University, San Marcos, on governing boards of numerous community organizations, including serving as the founding president of the Casa Teresa Central Guild in Orange County and has been a candidate for Congress in the 50th congressional district. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Run Women Run, which is a non-partisan political action committee that inspires, recruits, trains and mentors pro-choice San Diego women who are seeking elected or appointed office.

The meeting will be at the Napoli Italian Restaurant, 24960 Redlands Boulevard, Loma Linda, CA 92354-4004. Please try to arrive by 12:00pm in order to eat and get settled by the time for the speaker, at 1:00pm. A business meeting will follow the speaker and discussion period.

Redlands Area Democratic Club has a booth for outreach and voter registration most Thursdays at Market Night on State St in downtown Redlands. This is done in cooperation with Organizing for America, San Bernardino County region.
